Our Parish

A family of faith in Adelaide’s north

On 20th November 2016, the Feast of Christ the King and the conclusion of the Year of Mercy, St Euphrasia Syro-Malabar Parish was established by decree of Bishop Bosco Puthur from the Chancery of the Eparchy of Melbourne.

Our patroness is St Euphrasia (Evuprassiamma), and ours is the first parish to be established in her name. Our co-patron is St Anthony of Padua.

In 2012, the Syro-Malabar community in Adelaide received Rev Fr Francis Perumadan OFM Cap as its resident temporary chaplain. In 2013, Fr Frederick Eluvathingal was appointed as the first chaplain for this community. From humble beginnings a decade ago, with a few occasional family congregations, we progressed to become the first Syro-Malabar parish in South Australia. Rev Dr Biju John Chulayillaplackal became the first Vicar of the new parish.

Our parish stands out among similar Syro-Malabar parishes in the diocese for the Christian love among its families. We consider each other members of one extended family. Let us pray that this sense of love, fellowship and sharing continues as we grow together and go further in our journey of faith.

Our heritage

The Syro-Malabar Journey

The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church is a Major Archiepiscopal Church in full communion with the Apostolic See of Rome, headed by the Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly. It is one of the 23 sui iuris (autonomous) Eastern Catholic Churches in the Catholic communion, and the second largest after the Ukrainian Catholic Church. The Church follows the East Syrian liturgy, which dates back to the 3rd century.

Known for its deep-rooted spirituality and high rate of vocations to the priesthood and religious life, the Syro-Malabar Church is perhaps the most vibrant Catholic Church in the world, with over four million believers and a rich and fascinating history.

52 AD

Syro-Malabar Catholics, also called “St Thomas Christians”, trace their origins and faith to the missionary efforts of St Thomas the Apostle, who landed at Kodungallur in Kerala, India.

72 AD

St Thomas was martyred at Mylapur, Chennai, after preaching and establishing Christian communities in different parts of India.

16th century

Until the late 16th century, bishops were appointed and sent by the Patriarch of the East Syrian Church. The arrival of the Portuguese in India marked a new era, and after the Synod of Diamper the St Thomas Christians were brought under the rule of Latin bishops.

1653

In the Coonan Cross Oath at Mattancherry, many St Thomas Christians vowed to disobey the Latin hierarchy, beginning a rift in a Church that had been one until then. Those who continued under Latin rule formed the community that became the Syro-Malabar Church.

1923

After 230 years of Latin governance, the Syro-Malabar Church hierarchy was established in India.

1930

A fraction of those who had opposed the Portuguese, and later became Jacobites, reunited with the Catholic communion. They are now known as the Syro-Malankara Church.

1992

Pope John Paul II elevated the Church to the status of a Major Archiepiscopal sui iuris Church, with the title of Ernakulam-Angamaly. It is one of four Major Archiepiscopal Churches, with the Syro-Malankara, Ukrainian and Romanian Churches.

2013

On 23 December, Pope Francis established the Syro-Malabar Eparchy of St Thomas the Apostle, Melbourne, for Australia, the second eparchy outside India after Chicago, USA.

2014

Bishop Bosco Puthur, then Curia Bishop of the Major Archiepiscopal Curia in Kerala, was installed as the first Bishop of the new Eparchy on 25 March in Melbourne.

The religious, charitable and educational institutions of the Church have made an immense contribution to the welfare of Kerala and other states of India. The wide diaspora of the Indian community has carried the Syro-Malabar faithful beyond Kerala, and the Church now has a large presence in Australia.
